Single Mother Scholarships for Black Women

There are a huge number of women from the African American community that are living without their husbands. A considerable part of these women also face financial difficulties because they have to bear the burden of bringing up a family alone. Many of these single mothers do want to advance in their fields by getting college degrees, but the daycare expenditures and other financial constraints do not allow them to join a college degree program. To help single mothers complete their education many organizations in the public and private sector are offering scholarships for black women who cannot afford the expenses of college education. Some of these organizations are mentioned below.

  • The Sister Thea Bowman Foundation: Sister Thea Bowman Foundation was established by Sister Thea Bowman for the welfare of women from the African American community. The foundation provides aid to four single mothers from the African American community every year that are attending the College of St.Mary every year. The program is a very prestigious one because it provides aid of $30,000 for a four year period in addition to the aid of $24,000 provided by the college. In order to apply for these scholarships women must be able to show financial need.
  • eLearners.com: This organization is working solely for the benefit of single mothers. They have teamed up with online colleges like Walden University, Devry University and others to provide 285 single mother scholarships worth $5 million every year to single mothers from minority communities. They also run scholarship programs for non minority single mothers.
  • The United Negro College Fund: The fund is constituted to provide aid students from the African American community. It provides several single mother scholarships in collaboration with different donors.
  • Government: There are many government scholarships under different categories that can provide aid to single mothers from African American community.  Government runs programs for single mothers from all communities and also special programs for minority communities. Information on all government funded programs can be obtained from the website of the aid office of the U.S department of education.
