Scholarships for Kids with a Deceased Parent
-
If someone in your family has died, especially one of your parents, things can be pretty difficult. Not only do you have to handle yourself emotionally after the loss, but there can be financial problems as well. Therefore, a lot of organizations who have scholarship programs for kids with a deceased parent. With this money you can pay for your college education. Here are four scholarship programs that you may find helpful.
LIFE Lessons Scholarship: The total money offered by this organization each year as scholarships for kids with a deceased parent is $45,000—one $5,000 dollar scholarship and 40 $1,000 dollar scholarships. The selection criterion for this scholarship is a five hundred word essay or a three minute video in which the students explain the emotional and financial impact of the loss of a parent on their lives.
Kids’ Chance Scholarship: This organization offers scholarships to kids who have lost their mother or father in a work-related accident. This scholarship acknowledges that a sudden accident can prove even more destabilizing than a long illness. Kids’ Chance asks students to provide their transcripts, a description of the accident, and an overview of their family’s financial position.
The Mary Ellen Locher Foundation: This foundation awards scholarships to kids who have lost a parent due to breast cancer. Kids who are living with a breast cancer patient or a breast cancer survivor can also win this scholarship. Since this scholarship is designed to increase awareness about the fight against breast cancer, students will have to show their contribution in promoting breast cancer awareness in their community.
Federal Scholarships: There are many scholarships available for children who lost their parent severing the military. Families who have lost a parent in military service are financially compensated by the federal government. Also, parts of the GI Bill can be used for funding your own education if you ask in the right way. Contact your local VA chapter or go to their website to get more information about financial assistance.
Since the loss of a parent creates such a financial hardship, when you fill out your FAFSA forms, you will probably find yourself more eligible for grants than you thought you would be. No doubt the loss of a parent is probably one of the most difficult things to handle in life, the burden can be somewhat lightened by finding scholarships for kids with a deceased parent to help you with your school expenses.

What a great resource for kids looking to go to college. It is tough enough that they have had to deal with lose of a loved one early in life. I think your post gives specific resources for students to turn too. Great post!

Can you please suggest where I can find scholarship opportunities for my three children who lost their father to melanoma. Many of these scholarships cater to young people with cancer, breast cancer, or are state specific—-I haven’t had much luck finding scholarships for students with a deceased parent. Thanks!

Hello,
My farther passed away suddenly last week. He was the main provider for my family of six, and my co-signer for my student line of credit. Because of his health problems, my dad did not qualify for any insurance…I went to the bank yesterday and I was told that I would need to find another co-signer or the loan could be recalled. I have no other co-signer, and no way to pay back the $34,000 right away. If anyone could send me any information that could help me out I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Beth

i am looking for a grant for my granddaughter who lost her mother to a massive heart attack 1/29/2010. she has been accepted at both Humboldt State and Sacrament State Universities in california but will have a difficult time paying for college. She currently resides with me and I am currently receiving permanent disability through social security and am not financially able to assist in her pursuit of higher education although I am willing to do all that I possibly can. She has been an outstanding student throughout her school years with the exception of the last few months which reflect the toll her mother’s death has taken on her. She is working very hard to bring up two grades so that she will be able to start college in the fall. she has also be in the AFJROTC for all four years of high school achieving the rank of Cadet Lt. Col. If there is any information
or grants that would help her achieve the goals she and her mother set prior to her passing it would be most helpful to receive that information. My grand-daughter islooking to major in Psychology and work with military personnel both going to and coming home from conflict. Your assistance in finding the grants she will need will be much appreciated.

I lost my father 3 years ago to diabetes. Losing my father was the absolute horrific. I lost him at a time in my life when I needed him most. After I lost him, my grades slowly started to slip away, and as much as my mom tried, she could save me. Now, with much love and support from my mother, I was able to graduate. Problem is, there are no scholarships available to me. Is there any grants or funds out there to get assistance from. I have decided now, I need to pick up the pieces and make my father proud of me!

I am looking for scholarships for my 18 year old cousin. His mother (my aunt) died at the age of 38. He has experienced a very hard life since she has passed, as well as our entire family. He has been to many different high schools, living with many different families, while facing trouble in school with academics and finding himself. He has a very good heart and just wants to make something of himself. He is trying to make his way through life but still faces emotional break downs at times. Please help him and email any scholarship ideas to amh0716@gmail.com
