College Scholarships

A scholarship for attending college is a great chance for those who wish to attend college but cannot support themselves financially. College scholarships are available for both fresh graduates and people returning to college after a break. In fact, you can also win a scholarship if you are already attending college and have completed your freshman year. So, how difficult or easy is it to find a scholarship? Well, with scholarships you get what you research for. You will need to dedicate some time and effort to finding the right scholarship programs, and when you do, you will need to apply for them properly.

Application Process

Deadlines:

It’s important that you start your search for scholarship early. Most programs have specified a last date of submitting applications for scholarships. Deadline for scholarships should not be seen as the last date of getting your application in because there is chance that by then you may have already lost the competition. You should get your application well in advance of the last date. For example, if you are submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you should do so at least a couple of weeks in advance of the deadline.

Searching late may also result in you losing the opportunity to apply for some good scholarships, just because you found the program after the deadline had passed. Make sure that you know the last date of submission of all the scholarships that you have short-listed.

Application Essay:

You may also have to submit an essay with your scholarship application. The length of the essay will be mentioned by the awarding authority. You should start practicing the essay from the start of your scholarship search process. You should not copy and paste stuff that others have already written, because this is considered plagiarism. Keep things original and use your own creativity to construct sentences and provide the necessary information. Also, stay within the specified word limit: if you are asked to write a 500-word essay then don’t stretch it beyond this limit. When you have a final draft, check it for grammatical mistakes and other mistakes. If possible, ask someone else to proofread your document as well. You should make an effort to try and stand out from the crowd.
