  • Dr. Marie-France Desrosiers Memorial Scholarship. This program offers financial assistance to students majoring in psychology at Barry University. More information is available on their website.
  • Mansfield University Board of Governor’s Scholarship. This program offers a $1500 scholarship to African American students who plan to study at Mansfield University. Seven of these scholarships are awarded every year.
  • Deborah Wolfe Fellowship. This scholarship program is for students who wish to study abroad. This program will provide you with the unique experience of studying in another country.
  • National Black Nurses Association Ambi-Kiwi Scholarship. This program provides assistance to students majoring in nursing.
  • Oakwood College United Negro College Fund. Students who wish to study at Oakwood College in Huntsville, AL are eligible for this black scholarship. The amount of scholarship is $2000.
  • Nancy Wolridge Graduate Fellowship. This scholarship program is specifically for female students from African American community. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 to qualify for this program. It is a good option for females as there is no competition from male applicants.

The above programs are listed only to highlight the extensive opportunities available to African American students. Hundreds of more minority scholarship programs are also offered by different organizations, such as the FedEx/UNCF Scholarship Initiative Fund, The Ossie Davis Endowment Scholarship and The Ron Brown Scholar Program. However African American students should not restrict to applying for minority scholarships, you should make an application for every open or minority scholarship you are eligible for. Multiple applications increase the probability of winning a scholarship. Make sure you make every application with complete seriousness, fulfilling all the requirements of the scholarship awarding body, as the competition for each minority scholarship is tough.

Finding the resources to fund studies is becoming increasingly difficult nowadays, however if you are determined to continue your studies you can find a scholarship to fund your studies with little effort. There are many welfare organizations and educational institutions that offer scholarships specifically for African American minority students; all you need to find these scholarships is the knowledge of where to look for these scholarships. This article is an attempt to help minority students find African American scholarships.

There are a lot of scholarships offered to African American students from different fields  in different institutions in the US but remember you will have to put in some effort for finding those scholarships, meeting their requirements and applying for those scholarships. Finding a scholarship that suits your needs is not very difficult, as the competition for minority scholarships is low as compared to open scholarship programs but the scholarship is also not going to come to you without any effort. Some of the programs offered by different institutions are summarized below:

American Institute of Certified Public Accountants awards scholarship of up to 5000$ to quality students in the field of accountancy. Complete information is available on their website.

United Negro College Fund offers scholarships to students from different fields that cover tuition fees, room charges, books and other fees.

For science and medical students of African American community Vivian Thomas Scholarship is also awarded that covers tuition fees and living costs.

There is also a merit based scholarship that covers room, books, boarding and tuition fees offered to students from different fields by Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

In addition to the above mentioned programs you will also be able to find many other African American scholarships with little efforts on the internet; however you should not restrict to applying for only minority scholarships. You should apply for every open or minority scholarship program that you find on internet and that you are eligible for. Multiple applications will increase the probability of winning a scholarship and you might qualify for more than one scholarship, which will go a long way in assisting you with funding your studies. You should not make reckless applications; every scholarship application should be made with complete seriousness and care. Make sure that you are able to fulfill the criteria set out by the scholarship awarding body and you also provide all the information required by them.

Just as there are scholarships for different types of students, the USF Asian Alliance awards Asian scholarship to support undergraduate students that are of Asian background. The students that are accepted by the University of South Florida are also entitled to apply for these grants.

The requirements for applying for Asian scholarship are

  • The applicant should be of Asian background and heritage
  • The students who want to apply should be an undergraduate student and must be studying in any department and college at USF.
  • The applicant should have at least 3.25 GPA
  • If the applicant is new at college he or she should score 4.0 high school GPA
  • The applicant must be enrolled for full time in the semester
  • It is possible that the scholarship recipients may not receive more than one scholarship

You can apply for the scholarship following the right procedure. The first thing that you need to do is downloading the application form and fill it properly and accurately. You will have to write an essay on any one of the topics and you need to write on the application form. The first topic is to write about your opinion on keeping your Asian traditions in United States and another topic is on how will you contribute to the USF community, as you are an Asian student. Along with this you have to provide a copy of your latest transcript. You have to submit the application form to the Scholarship Committee Chair. The deadline for these scholarships is fixed and it is June 15 and December 15.

The scholarship amount is $500 to each recipient. The decisive factor lies in the hands of the Scholarship Committee and you will have to abide by the decision.
