The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) was founded in 1975 as a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization. The aim of HSF is to strengthen the US by advancing college education among Hispanic Americans by doubling the rate of Hispanics earning college degrees. For this purpose the fund provides more scholarships and educational outreach support compared to any other organization in the country. Given below are descriptions of two of the scholarship for Latinos available through HSF.
HSF/ General College Scholarships
HSF/ General College Scholarships are provided to Hispanic students looking to earn a college degree. Scholarships are available on a competitive basis to: graduating high school seniors; community college students; community college transfer students; undergraduate students; and graduate students. The scholarship awards usually range from $1,000 to $5,000.
To be eligible for the scholarship you must: be of Hispanic heritage; have US citizenship or legal permanent residency with a permanent resident card or a valid passport stamped I-551; have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 out of 4.0; be looking to enroll in a full-time degree-seeking program at a two- or four-year institution accredited by the U.S.. the institution can be located in the US, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands or Guam [these requirements are for enrollment during the 2010 to 2011 academic year]; must submit an application for federal financial assistance by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) [check FAFSA website for details]; and be pursuing first undergraduate or graduate degree.
HSF/Atrisco Heritage Foundation Scholarship Program
HSF/Atrisco Heritage Foundation Scholarship Program provides scholarship to outstanding Latinos who are heirs of the Atrisco Land Grant of New Mexico. Graduating high school seniors, undergraduate students and graduate students from all over the nation can apply for this scholarship. The award amount to be disbursed in fall 2010 is $2,000.
In order to access your application, you will first need to contact the Atrisco Companies to verify heirship.
The eligibility requirements are the same as the HSF/ General College Scholarships, with the exception of the required grade point average, which is 2.0 out of 4.0 for this scholarship.
